Premise: Gallery 263 is accepting applications for its Summer 2012 Residency. In 2010, Gallery 263 created the Artist-in-Residency Program to offer affordable shared studio space for emerging artists, and to initiate interactions between the Cambridge community and its artist residents. The program emphasizes not only the final product of art, but the creative process. Participating artists benefit by having full access to a versatile work space. The high ceilings, natural light and track lighting make for ideal studio conditions. The enhanced attention of a street level studio is especially beneficial to emerging artists looking to promote their work and increase their audience. The community benefits from the vitality of an active studio in its neighborhood, gaining the opportunity to observe, participate, learn, and hopefully find inspiration to create in their own lives.
Each residency session is twelve weeks in length. The space will be shared by three to five artists, all mediums welcome to apply (painters, writers, musicians, etc.). Our past residents have included our Founders, Annie Newbold and David Craft, David Lasley (painter), Jean-Francois Caubet (photographer), Elizabeth Green (composer), Golden Arrows (graphic design collective), Adam Ribaudo (mixed media) and Bennett Grizzard (painter). The Summer 2011 Residency was a collaborative on-site installation called The Cave Project, led by Laura Francis. The project included eight collaborating artists as well as dozens of volunteers, and eventually concluded with a public painting party. The most recent Winter Residency 2012 featured Georgia Kennedy (installation), Nicole Maloof (2D design) and Veronica Shimanovskaya (painting & sculpture). By seeking diverse artistic visions, Gallery 263 introduces visitors to a wide range of innovative art. Artists are selected on the basis of their work quality, originality, and their personal commitment to community interaction and collaboration. Traditionally the end of each Residency period concludes with a two week group exhibition.
